Vandal Online
It is one of the worthier options among the titles which try to compete with WoW, and the one that has convinced us the most to date.

Through my adventure I found several things that I wasn’t a fan of but the things that I did like pretty much overcame the negatives, The folks over at Cryptic obviously put a lot of time and care into creating a wonderfully detailed world and it shows with every explosion, dust storm covered planet, asteroid belt and star cruiser.

This is as fine a[n] homage to one of Sci-fi's great franchises a[s] you can get in an MMO format.

A refreshing change of pace for jaded MMO gamers. [Mar 2010, p.68]
Gamers.at
Two months after its release Star Trek Online is still missing content, especially at the high level range and on the Klingon side of the game. The good point is that Cryptic is steadily releasing updates. But despite that the game is still a game more for casual mmo gamers than core gamers.

It’s a unique but half-baked attempt to convert the Star Trek license into an online game. For Star Trek fans this game is still something very special, but it will need regular updates to keep the players motivated.

Star Trek Online could have been so much better… Unfortunately there are too many areas where the game structure suffers from a certain lack of depth. We would recommend it only to real Trekkies.

My opinion is...I like what I see thus far, Cryptic has some tweaks to do perhaps and more content coming... but it's a good start.

On the whole, STO is very promising; it needs a little more clean-up and content, but the fundamentals of the gameplay are very strong, and the options available during character creation make for an experience with a lot of potential depth.

The solution to this problem might be corrected by better choices, including more Star Trek-like non-violent solutions and away mission problems, and a less obnoxiously difficult equipment upgrade system, which might give captains the will to live in this world.

Don't get me wrong, there's a ton of things to do in the game, there's just not much depth to it at this stage of things.

An undeniably fun space-combat MMO, with the bones of a rich universe but still plenty of catching up to do. [Apr 2010, p.102]
Cynamite
Star Trek Online is a nice MMORPG for Trekkies. Every other gamer will be haunted by its flaws.

The Star Trek saga finds its own online counterpart in this immense title. Despite the very strong and entertaining starship fighting and exploration systems, the shallow gameplay and the terrible on-foot missions prevents this game from being the announced hit that was rumored.

Cryptic did well recreating the Star Trek universe and the space combat works just fine. It's so a shame that ground episodes are that bad and the experience feels less massive than It was supposed to be.

In the end, Star Trek Online is a mixed bag. If you are a Star Trek fan you will get a huge kick out of being able to pilot your own ship into combat and having brushes with people places and things you have seen in the series and movies. Gamers who are not fans will still find a beautiful game with wonderful audio and music, but the shortcomings in gameplay outside of space combat leave much to be desired.

Star Trek Online has some strengths, but sadly there have been more negative aspects until now. There is just no diversification.

A smattering of memorable moments in 50+ hours of game time simply isn’t good enough for me to be able to recommend Star Trek Online to MMO fans. It’s quite a gorgeous game, but that novelty evaporates, and what’s left is repetitive, and simple in all the wrong parts.

Until then, I'm still going to say this game is definitely worth a look - just be aware of what you're getting into before forking over the extra cash for the nigh-indefinite-length subscription options they offer.

Great visual adaptation but bored gameplay. Recommended only to fans of the franchise.

On occasion, Star Trek Online comes together and provides an epic and fun experience. However, these moments are hidden deep inside the repetitive and boring gameplay.

Star Trek Online is a good game. The battles between the ships can make the joy of the fans, but also to other players might like. The part about the planets , however, will completely disappoint both for the behavior of our comrades who are not always up to their task. Recommended only to fans of the franchise, and those who are willing to forgive these flaws.

It's almost "ha-ha" buggy in the same way that Fallout 3 was, but at times can cause a great deal of grief. [Issue#93, p.108]
Eurogamer
Despite all of these complaints, those hordes of starship captains are quite happy. They may not have many different things to do, and the missions and UI may be rather buggy, but there does seem to be enough content to sustain them - at least until the endgame - and even at its worst that content is knockabout fun with more instant appeal, and more suitability for casual, short-session, low-commitment play than most MMOs.

Star Trek online can be defined as a causal alternative to Eve Online; a lot of ideas mixed in a cauldron where the result is a bland soup. You can love its atmospheres, especially if you are a Trekker, but if you are a skilled player you will soon forget it.

Cryptic Studios has created a great visual adaptation of the Star Trek universe, with a faithful recreation for the followers of the saga and complete character customization system. However, this title is hampered by their poorly implemented style of play that don't allows users to feel the experience of living and exploring beyond the final frontier. An interesting game for a look, but not for staying.

Such a lackluster implementation. [May 2010, p.74]
LEVEL (Czech Republic)
Great potential of the game remains buried and players have to dig deep through many useless ballast. Still, it’s worth digging. [Issue#189]
1UP
Ultimately, Star Trek Online's problem is that it doesn't put enough emphasis on its own ground combat abilities. The action feel much better in space, where properly combining a Tachyon Beam and a boost to auxiliary power can result in the swift annihilation of your enemy.

The space combat is short-lived fun, but everything else about this online role-playing game is bland and shallow.
Read Full Review >PC Zone UK
Right now, Star Trek Online is a mess of a title with little to recommend beyond the novelty of flying around in a replica of the Enterprise. As soon as that novelty wears off (ideally within the 30-day trial period), this will be one universe badly in need of a reboot.
Star Trek Online is far from perfect, but based on it’s placement fills a niche for sci-fi gamers between EVE Online and Star Wars Galaxies.
Star Trek Online can be considered an impressive piece of fan service but, as a game, is a disappointingly unimaginative and shallow example of the MMO genre with severely flawed, poorly thought out mechanics that do little to draw players away from the powerful embrace of WoW.
Trek fans are meant to salivate at the sights and sounds of their favorite universe made manifest, like a dog hearing the chime of a chow bell. And publisher Atari is banking on the hope that -- like Pavlov's pups -- consumers will be content with the same ol' kibble day after day. The result is a shallow, poorly paced, and repetitive game that, divorced from its storied source material, wouldn't warrant a second look.

Shawn O. gave it a7:
I'm going to have to agree with Don H. on this. First, fanboy expectations of this game are a little ridiculous and quibbling over nonsense like the scale of the star systems is stupid. Do you really expect for space travel from Earth to Bajor to be in real-time? That would make for one exciting experience, wouldn't it? Beyond that, the jury was out on this game way too early. I'm not an MMO player and I wouldn't give someone a nickel to play WoW as I have no interest in the genre but I am a gamer and a Star Trek gamer at that and I bought a lifetime mebership as well only for the fact that if I get two years out of it, it will be paid for. That being said, I haven't played the game in over a month and I just got back into it this week and the improvements that have already been made have been dramatic. I'll be the first to admit that I began playing this thinking to my self, "that's it?" as there really wasn't much of a difference between the closed-Beta version of the game and the initial release. I'm amazed at how much better it has become in just the past 6 weeks. The complaint about not having any incentive to team up... gone. I have been in a multiple battles in the past three days that have required assistance from fellow players or I would not have been able to beat them and that's in space and on the ground. One of the biggest complaints I had was that the missions were dull and simplistic with little storyline and and the same generic tasks. That to, albeit not perfect, is improving. Cryptic seems very receptive to the input of the players and they seem to want to make the experience improve by continuing to evolve it. In my opinoon what happened s that they released this game ealrier than they really wanted towhich is why it seemed "not finished." Also, something that really bugs me is when players complain that an MMORPG is subscription based. Grow up, you big babies. It's an open-ended environment that need to be constantly maintained and Cryptic doesn't bombard you with advertisements and doesn't make you buy upgrades. if you had asked me last month where this game ranked, I'd say a 5 but today it's a solid 7.5. It's not quite an 8 so I'm leaving it at 7 but Cryptic that they really care about this product to improve what needs to be improved.
Mike H gave it a0:
I raised a ticket 9 weeks ago unable to log in and had my first response last week "we have an internal error with your account". No solution offered, no plan to investigate, just the level of support that Cryptic are famous for. The disk is great for preventing coffee rings on my desk though !
Mike M gave it a2:
Buggy, laggy, and not fun. Yet another game that imitates a MMO in order to charge a monthly fee yet offers no incentive or motivation to actually team up to accomplish a task. Why are there games that do more for multiplayer while not charging a fee? Cryptic excels at squandering potential when it comes to game design.
Richard S gave it a3:
Realism is key for me in games, as I am a hardcore gamer, and a Trekie to boot. To me, this MMO is a poor execution of everything Star Trek means to me. I have a list of things I don't like, most of which people have mentioned already. -scale of star systems: according to the game, it is only a couple dozen kilometers from a planet and it's moon/asteroid belt (!?!). Asteroid belts don't orbit planets. In STO every planet has asteroids, it kinda got to me. No reason not to die. No economy. (WoW clone type economy doesn't count in my book) Repetitive everything. No reason to buy stuff, everything is dropped by loot or mission reward. No reason to socialize. Frankly, no reason to play. :( Things I liked: phasers and photon torpedoes.... ground combat the first few times.
Adam B. gave it a6:
This game should have taken a note from the 2009 Star Trek film. The film was loud and mindless but constantly exciting, while this game is basically City of Heroes with a Star Trek license applied. Boring, unintuitive, and difficult to get together with other players. What's the point of an online game when ninety percent of the time is spent playing alone? On the plus side the character and ship customization are excellent, and the combat systems while humorously outdated are serviceable. It's too bad you can't explore your own ship, communicate in meaningful ways with NPCs, and create your own story; it's the usual MMO grind-fest which has been done better dozens of times by other developers.
Derek L. gave it a9:
STO is a very good game. It needs some improvement, but the developer Cryptic has shown that they love giving away free updates that fix and improve the game. The flight sim of space might seem complex at first, what with a million complex button options, but is actually very easy to grasp. The storyline is very simple yet still richly detailed, allowing both Star Trek fans and novices to understand and enjoy. In my opinion, the best battles are on planets with your away team. There are possibly a thousand different weapons - from phaser rifles to disruptor launchers - that each have their own unique sense of purpose and belonging. In short, this is a great game that nobody will forget any time soon, and I strongly recommend buying it.
Kerias S gave it a9:
You know, here is the thing to me. This game makes the term WoWKiller that everyone likes to throw around laughable. Even if it were possible to defeat WoW, this game is just -not- that good. But thats because it is a game for the fans. I'm a classic fan of star-trek, and I adore it. At first, all of the systems seemed clunky and odd, but I did not give up. After a while, once I got more powers, saw more of the story and started playing with a friend, it suddenly became so much better. Its a good game if you're a fan and have some time to kill, but if you don't like star trek, you will hate this game.
