Call of Duty Classic has taken a big part in shaping the genre into what it is today. As out-dated as it may look it has nostalgic qualities to it and for 1,200 Microsoft Points it’s worth every penny for a true fan.

A genuine classic that's worth another look. [Feb 2010, p.104]

Call of Duty, while still a very primitive version of what the story would become, flashes some of the brilliance that the series is known for. If you’ve never played it, then you should—if for nothing else than to see just how far we’ve come in games in such a short, short time.

IGN

Call of Duty is still an enjoyable game, but it doesn't really shine in this downloadable version.

Truth is, $15 is a good price for a fun game, but I'm still not sure why you would choose to spend it here.

Even for its shortcomings online and the control issues, though, Call of Duty Classic is still an enjoyable singleplayer experience that will give fans of the series a glimpse at the game that started it all…provided you’re willing to drop 1200 Microsoft points on the shorter ride.

A fun multiplayer and solid single-player, but certainly feels its age. Perfect for gamers who miss the original, and for those who want a taste of classic PC gaming.

Although the graphics are outdated, it is still a game to enjoy. People who play the CoD-games a lot, but never played the first part on the PC, now have the chance to play this first Call of Duty game.

Vandal Online

Although it is not as technically advanced as other downloadable games of the consoles, and the control is sometimes frustrating, it is a good opportunity for war action fans to revive one of the classics of the genre.

It's the same game you've already played in its more advanced form, making this more of an academic exercise in gaming genealogy.

Better as a historical document than a contemporary first-person shooter. [Issue#55, p.104]

Game Chronicles

All said, Call of Duty Classic won’t win any awards 7 years later – but at $15, it’s not like the game is promising all that much. Still, given the fact that there are plenty of sub-$20 current games for sale, Classic is really only for those who truly want to relive 2003-era gameplay.

Brilliant in 2003, Call of Duty is an old man in a young man's world. [Christmas 2009, p.118]

The old war vet is clearly past its best, but there's still much for younger conscripts to learn here.

[anonymous] gave it a10:
I enjoy the first Call of Duty the most because of its difficulty. This game PROVES just how much we've been babied by developers because of the whole "hide behind a corner to gain health" idea. Beating this game on Veteran was probably the hardest thing to do not only on the original PC version but on this Xbox remake as well.

Eric H gave it a9:
Dated graphics, sure. Somehow it's just as enjoyable as it was when I first ran out to grab it for the PC, though. Infinity Ward always knows how to drag you into the yarns they spin. The Stalingrad reinforcement segment is as tense as it ever was.

Nathan R gave it a9:
Great game. If your looking for a game like mw2 or a newer shooter than don't even play it. I loved this game back when I used to play it on the pc, and I'm glad I can now play it on the 360.
