Once you realize what the game is and a bit on how it’s best played, the gameplay really picks up. Gel does have a fairly steep learning curve, but it’s one that becomes more rewarding quickly once you understand how to best play it and formulate a strategy of how to optimize your scoring. Some of the challenges will push you to the edge of endurance and puzzle solving.

If you’ve been thirsting for a puzzle title on Xbox LIVE Arcade, you really can’t go wrong with this playful creation. There is a ton of play time, along with local and Xbox LIVE multiplayer support, as well as the promise of downloadable content. Sometimes the difficulty of Puzzle Mode will get you down, but it’s a sidebar to what the game has to offer as a whole. Spend those points.

The art style and music are generic, but the sliding/melting mechanics are good fun. If you're a puzzle fan, check this one out.

There’s a whole lot to do if you enjoy challenging puzzlers: over 100 levels on Puzzle mode, tons of stages on Action mode, co-op support, and several multiplayer modes locally or via Xbox LIVE.

The game formula doesn't reach its full potential in Action-mode. Nevertheless Gel: Set & Match is an original and entertaining puzzle game. It's not as brilliant as Super Puzzle Fighter, nor is it as accessible as Bejeweled, but with a little extra work a sequel should proof more succesful.

For us, Gel never quite...gelled. [Aug 2009, p.77]
GamePro
Action mode is fast-paced, as you seek out a fresh pathway for a pursing tank, which becomes immobile if gel blocks stand in its way. Puzzle mode, however, is less stressful.

Aside from the fact that Gel has a dead online community there really isn’t anything spectacular going for the arcade game.
