Fight together...or die alone. A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic's victims become grotesquely disfigured, wildly violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. One of the "lucky" few apparently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty Infacted. Together with a handful of fellow Survivors, you must fight your way to safety or die alone. A co-operative multiplayer action game from the makers of "Counter-Strike," Left 4 Dead is built atop the most advanced version of the Source Engine and introduces version 2 of Turtle Rock's artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology. The most innovative multiplayer videogame since pioneers "Quake" and "Doom." Thanks to a brilliant marriage of gameplay mechanics with cinematic genre, Left 4 Dead creates genuine fright while not only enabling, but forcing cooperation between four players fighting for their survival. Endlessly engaging and virtually flawless, it's destined to be one of the most successful original vidgames of 2008, and set a new standard for cooperative gameplay.

Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

An incredible package. It’s claustrophobic and sinister, yet utterly action packed and arcadey at the same time. It’s completely gorgeous, yet the visuals serve the gameplay at all times, whether that’s through subtle changes to the presentation to alter the mood, or the fact that you’re playing so much of the game at the end of a flashlight.

Simply put, every time the Director brings down a swath of Infected, who then pound me into hamburger, and every time my team and I manage to survive against incredible odds until the end, and we hoot and holler about besting the Director, I do the same thing: I jump into another lobby and wait for a match to start. When playing with friends, Left4Dead gives the best cooperative experience in gaming, hands down. Nothing compares. The game is lacking a bit in terms of content, and more weapons and locations would definitely add to the experience, but nothing can take away from the sheer enjoyment value. Left 4 Dead transcends the black and white of 'single player' or 'multiplayer' – suddenly there's a realisation that four players have amalgamated into a single, unified body during play. It's an incredibly exhilarating feeling, and other games offering co-op modes that amount to little more than running and gunning together suddenly appear a little juvenile. Left 4 Dead has indefinitely raised the bar for true co-operative play.

Between the tense campaign and the frenetic Versus mode, Left 4 Dead offers two distinct flavors of multiplayer action that are equally delicious when enjoyed with friends. The single-player experience (and the marginally better but somewhat sluggish split-screen mode) isn't as tasty, simply because the friendly AI can't compare to a human teammate.

Beyond its categorical success in establishing a vivid picture of the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead's biggest breakthrough is the way it blurs the lines between the often compartmentalized pieces of a modern first-person shooter. Compared to a lot of the other games released this fall the content offered in Left 4 Dead is on the meager side. You can breeze through the campaign in one sitting, and the multiplayer versus mode isn't all that interesting in the long run. Left 4 Dead should be enjoyed with up to three other players in co-op, a mode where this game really shines and offers you intense non stop action where cooperation is a must. If you enjoy playing with others, this is a must have. If not there are more meaty games to invest in this fall.

Randall S gave it an8:
Overall, a very good game, though it does get old kind of easily because of the lack of missions and weapons and all-around diversity. However there's probably no funner game to play in a dark room with a friend.

David B. gave it a9:
Left 4 Dead is a "must have" for zombie movie enthusiasts that also love first person shooters. The music, the lighting, sound effects, and graphics all add to the psychological tension as you play. The game is unpredictable in terms of knowing when or where the hoarde will strike next. The two biggest issues I have with it are: 1) the small number of weapons to choose from, and 2) that you can ocassionally see some enemies "clipping" through the walls. It is also worth mentioning that the game is much more fun to play in coop. mode than it is in single player. This game is worth getting, especially if you love to be scared by zombies.

elmo b. gave it an8:
This is an amazing game. Ive played it now for 40+ hours online and i'm still not tired of it. The best way to play this game is with four friends online on advanced or expert difficulty. If your buying this game to play by yourself or dont like to play games on easy or normal this is definetly not the game for you. The campaign is very short for my taste but this game was created by the company that brought us counter strike people. Its meant to be played on versus mode online. plain and simple. for those of you who dont know what counter strike is then you really shouldnt be buying this game. this game is not like zombie panic and i dont see why people make an argument about this game being a mod. ive never played a game that forces you to play as a team. weather you live or die all depends how you play as a team. and when your a special infected, killing the survivors isnt that easy if your trying to do it alone. great game im having a blast with it. i only gave this game an 8 because it only has 2 campaings which equals 10 maps for versus. it should really get a 7 just based on that but after playing it for so many hours and still looking forward to getting of work and playing it with some friends it definetly deseerves a 8 at least.

Anon Ymous gave it a10:
First off, at Jack T, who I assume has the last name Thompson, this has a BLOOD MARK ON THE COVER. Not only that, but a severed finger and a 17+ on the front. Any idiot should be able to tell that it's not a game for small children. Also, there was a reason for your disbarment. You tried to boycott something that fell under the first amendment a few too many times, and I would assume that you forgot that you are an IDIOT. Anyway, I love this game. It's excellent and has plenty of fun, and would be great without the morons trying to make this into every versus shooter known to man. In short, Heath is ALMOST right, but you should find some friends who can behave themselves, and play with them in a closed group.

Hervé G. gave it a10:
This game is really a masterpiece. It turns out that I have plenty of hilarious or scary stories to tell about my experiences in this game, and I think this is the same with everyone, because this game is not only very good, but also each time you play it it is different. Also the buddies A.I. is really good, and as they are talking all the time, and thanks with their amazing characterization, you almost think that they are alive at moments, even when you are playing alone.

Ike A. gave it a3:
Okay, so I went out and bought this game based on the mass of positive reviews. Man, what a mistake. first off, contrary to the name, it's not a 4 player game, it's 2. unless you want to do system links... which means 2 Xboxes and two copies of L4D. that seems efficient. Maybe I'm old fashion, but there's something a lot more enjoyable about a game when you are playing with people sitting next to you, not people you'd hate in real life, if you met, 1/2 way across the US. So it's a 2 person game, but there are 2 AIs that get in your way constantly and/or die horribly. Which really makes me confused because the game's AI and score keeper treats them like they aren't AI's... so why can't they be controlled by people. There is a horrible lacking in weaponry, and considering how horrible a shot you can be in this game and still succeed, you'd think they'd make it a lil more diverse... maybe more than one gun with a scope. The mobs are repetitive, not even counting the hordes of regular zombies that flood at you. The occasional special zombie, while interesting the first 2-3 levels, become tedious and old shortly after. The game is mindless and even though the scene's change, you find yourself with a strange feeling of deja vu in many new areas. I see where they wanted to go with this game, and it has a lot of great things to say about it. But it really falls short in some major categories. They should have stuck with a PC game, even on the Xbox it feels like a clunky PC game, and then at least I wouldn't feel ripped off having bought a 2 person game that does everything in it's power to call it 4 person.

Jon S gave it a10:
All of the naysayers on this board probably played it for an hour or so without trying it on either the higher difficulties, didn't play it with a friend or online, or didn't play the versus mode. It's a BLAST. Anyone who has played it with friends or a good team online will tell you that it is an amazing play experience.
