Summary

RATING: PG for brief mild language

Starring Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Andy Samberg, Mr. T, and Tracy Morgan

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will be the most delicious event since macaroni met cheese. Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain. Flint Lockwood is a young inventor who dreams of creates something that he hopes will improve everyone's life. At the very least, it has a drastic effect on the weather. (Sony Pictures)

LA Weekly Ernest Hardy

Cloudy is smart, insightful on a host of relationship dynamics, and filled with fast-paced action.

Wise and respectful of its audience, "Cloudy" thus never stops the fun.

The sights are ingenious, impressively rendered in 3-D, and the sounds – including cheeky voice work by Mr. T, Neil Patrick Harris, and Benjamin Bratt – are a blast.

The film combines a pinch of morality with a healthy dose of humor to produce a movie that's entertaining for everyone.

It’s a brisk, bright, winning effort, even though it already looks sadly out of touch with the times.

Ends with a big action sequence, turning into Raiders of the Lost Arby's when you wish it would serve up something less conventional. But by that time, the filmmakers have also served up a little food for thought, along with a lot of laughs.

A surprisingly savory treat, though it doesn't bear much resemblance to the charming classic children's book on which it's based.

Los Angeles Times Glenn Whipp

The movie's humor targets both kids and grown-ups with equal success, but, even with the presence of a mustache-fixated monkey, the main attraction here is the movie's vibrant 3-D animation and its perfect storm of foodie-friendly sight gags.

The Hollywood Reporter Stephen Farber

The splashy animation is well-executed but again a bit monotonous for a full-length feature.

Eye-popping and mouth-watering in one, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs spins a 30-page children's book into a 90-minute all-you-can-laugh buffet.

Goes down easy enough at first. But even at a svelte 81 minutes, this meal drags on too long.

There is clear definition between closer and further elements. I've seen a lot of 3-D recently, and in terms of technical quality, this is the best.

The New York Times Daniel M. Gold

If the filmmakers opt to make only light statements about junk food, obesity and solid waste, they at least leave the audience sated on a single serving of inspired lunacy.

The year’s 3-D deluge continues: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an amusingly loopy kids’ meal about a small-town inventor.

Leaves us with is sporadic showers of laughs for kids under 10. That's a shame, because the film could have been a delight for everyone, if only it hadn't learned to behave.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this movie is 7.8 (out of 10) based on 51 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Kenneth S. gave it a5:
The animation is pretty good, but not state-of-the art, and there are some funny moments in the story. The whole thing reminded me of SpongeBob, only with a more ridiculous and cliched plot.

Mathew w. gave it a10:
Aged 15 it was not aimed at me but this film is ultimately watchable at a very very high level.

[Anonymous] gave it an8:
I really don't understand the hate for this movie. I rented this to watch with my family, and we were all cracking up at the use of physical comedy and the above-average jokes (especially for a kid's movie). The first 2/3 of the movie were extremely funny, while the last 1/3 changed it's tone to action/adventure. It's a shame the end wasn't more satisfying, but it is still definitely worth seeing.

Matt B gave it a1:
I'm the average commenter here and I hated the movie because it was TOO KIDDY and needed more sexual/violent content to keep my bad self satisfied. I am an adult after all, and too "mature" to enjoy something simple, innocent, and directed at the unwashed youth of America.

Jesse J. gave it a10:
Probably the funniest movie I saw in 09, an adult is saying this. The characters facial emotions have been perfectly drawn each time, you will keep wanting to watch the movie over and over again just to look at the emotions on the faces because they are so perfect and funny. I recommend any one to watch this, and those blue and purple clouds looked unbelievable amazing on my Series 7 LED.

Dave H gave it a7:
A good movie, but had many awkward momments even I blushed.

Claudio B. gave it a10:
The animation is great, it is very funny and it gives a good message to the children.
